February 5, 2025, marked the day citizens of the United States came together in a show of coordinated protest across the entire country, registering their dissent towards President Donald Trump’s new policies and his now infamous Project 2025. The protests covered all 50 states, signaling that there is indeed widespread discontent with the way the administration was heading.
Dubbed the 50501 Movement, or “50 protests, 50 states, one day,” these protests were in part orchestrated primarily online, under hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501. Protesters spoke out against various policies, strategies, and amendments from the administration. The protests spoke out against immigration policies, diversity programs, and effects of Project 2025, a blue-to-do conservative document that would give federal governance “a new look”.
Around the World. Capitol, where demonstrators carried placards with the following messages: “Don’t let democracy die” and “Checks and balances make America great.” The demonstrators walked to the Department of Labor where officials from the Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Elon Musk, had set up shop. Musk is a close Trump ally who has been spearheading efforts to trim the federal workforce. Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia, spoke to the protesters, stressing the need for bipartisan action against the administration’s policies.
Thousands marched through downtown Austin protesting against President Trump’s policies and Elon Musk’s involvement in the restructuring of government. The crowd chanted slogans like “No more Musk, stop the coup” as protesters voiced their worries over Musk’s access to federal employee data and his influence in DOGE. Even though Musk has been credited with adding to Texas’s economy through Tesla and SpaceX, his involvement in governmental affairs has received a lot of backlash.
Protesters marched in Lansing, Michigan, braving icy weather in protest against the administration’s policies. Signs replete with the phrases “Stop Project 2025” and “Dump Trump” were all over, and these were indeed the ideas dominating the protesters’ worries. For 32-year-old St. Joseph resident Mia Foster, this protest was especially meaningful: “Even if it doesn’t have an immediate effect, it’s something to do.” Foster, a transgender woman, was concerned about the language being used in the administration’s proposals and how this could lead to harm inflicted upon communities that are often the most persecuted.

Some 400 people filled the Oregon State Capitol State Park, chanting slogans such as “This is what democracy looks like” and “Hey hey, ho ho, Elon Musk has got to go.” Protesters trudged through snow to get there, showing how much they care about the cause against Project 2025. Monika Katz came all the way from southern Oregon, saying “My group drove up hours through the snow because Project 2025 scared us.” The event brought up concerns regarding how this initiative may affect different communities, including immigrants and Indigenous peoples.
One controversial area is Project 2025. It appears to empower the president and force his ultra-conservative agenda on society. The protagonists of the 50501 Movement say that the project victimizes the vulnerable, increases surveillance, further burdens control over reproduction, and cuts more funds available for important services such as education and healthcare. All these concerns resonate well in the minds of citizens everywhere in the country and are voicing their views.
Though all through the rallies, there was a constant appeal to bipartisan action. Speakers urged people to interact not only with Democratic representatives but also plead with the Republicans. Senator Mark Warner continued by saying, “We are only going to break this when we have Republicans willing to stand up as well. Put the pressure not just on us but on everybody, every elected official.” There is an added desire for bipartisan unity in getting the country past its challenges.
The February 5, 2025 National Day of Action embodies an important milepost in the history of American civic life. People of widely different backgrounds could come together solely because of an interest in protesting against current governmental policies and the implications Project 2025 is going to impose. Grass roots organizations like 50501 show that such democracies as Americans claim to embrace are the sole real arbiters of democratic ideas and social justice.
